Newark, N.J. -- Upsilon Phi Chapter presented eight awards as part of their Annual Achievement Week Awards Program conducted at New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday, December 9, 2006. Past Grand Basileus James Avery and District Representative Marvin Dillard were two of the 187 persons in attendance who heard keynote speaker the Honorable Cory Booker, Mayor of Newark, NJ challenge those in attendance to become involved in community and public service. The Brothers of Upsilon Phi were especially pleased to recognize the work of the Educational Opportunity Fund of New Jersey. The Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) is one of the nation's most comprehensive and successful state-supported efforts to provide access to higher education for economically and educationally disadvantaged students. Past Grand Basileus James Avery has been a Board Member of the EOF for a number of years and received the Uplift Award along with Dr. Glenn Land, Executive Director of the Fund. This year’s awardees included: Rev. Dr. M. William Howard, Jr, Citizen of the Year; The Schoor DePalma Community Foundation, Corporate Citizenship Award; The Education Opportunity Fund (EOF), the Uplift Award; Steven Browne, Student of the Year; Charlotte DeFilippo, Outstanding Public Service Award; Brother Charles Watts, Superior Service Award; Brother William H.L.Oliver, Basileus/Founders Award; and Brother Bruce D. Harman, Omega Man of the Year. |

Newark, N.J. – Upsilon Phi presented six awards as part of their Annual Achievement Week Awards Program conducted at New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday, November 19, 2005. District Representative Greg Ackles was one of the 150 persons in attendance who heard keynote speaker Dr. Gloria Boseman, Professor of Nursing at New Jersey City University mesmerize the crowd with her message of social responsibility. This year’s awardees included Bro. Zinnerford Smith, Omega Man of the Year; Brother Samuel T. McGhee, Superior Service Award; Brother Bruce D. Harman, Basileus Award; Professor Ben Jones, New Jersey City University, Citizen of the Year Award; and Kieth Hooper, Student of the Year, St. Benedicts Prep. |
